Family Keller - English

Hennoch Keller and his wife Tauba Antonia come from Jewish families in Galicia, which was then part of Austria-Hungary. Both birth places are small towns whre Jews, Poles and Ukrainians lived. The parents of Hennoch Keller are Meier Wolfgang Keller and Sara, born Samel. He has a sister named Ada, married Abramowitz.

After the first world war Hennoch and Antonia are most likely coming to Germany. Hennoch settles down in Magdeburg as a merchant and trader. His sister Ada visits him a few times in Magdeburg in the 1920’s. In 1929 Hennoch and Anntonia Altbauer marries in Galicia. Her first son Meier Wolfgang is born in 1931. Later in 1937 they had a daughter named Suzanne.

Due to the Nazi seizure of power in 1933, the family flees to Belfort, France, approximately 50 Km southwest of Mulhouse. Henochs brother Naphtali lives there with his family as well. The family Keller seems to live a good life in Belfort but with the invasion of the German Wehrmacht in 1942, they are threatened once again.

On July 14, 1942 Tauba Antonia Keller is arrested during a raid in Belfort and later deported to Auschwitz, whre she is murdered. Meier Wolfgang and his father Hennoch Keller are brought to Camp Drancy on October 13, 1942. From there they are deported to Auschwitz on November 4, where they are also murdered. At this time, little Suzanne is only 4 years old. She is presumably hidden by her father or friendly individuals in a French monastery. After her time in the monastery, she is placed in an orphanage, from which a neighbor from Belfort establishes contact with her aunt in Jerusalem. Suzanne goes to live with her aunt in Jerusalem in 1947 oder 1948 and has been working at the General Workers‘ Health Insurance Fund since 1956. Whether she is still alive today is unknown.
