Eugen Hirsch - English

Eugen Hirsch, born on July 1, 1891 in Magdeburg, was a cigarette manufacturer and originated from a respected jewish family. His parents, Abraham Hirsch and Helene Selowsky, founded a successful cigarette-, tobacco- und cigarfactory in 1972. Eugen worked in the family business and later became a representative for various cigarette companies but further informations are missing.  

 

Charlotte Gottschalk was born on July 1, 1894 as the daughter of Albert Gottschalk and Meta Nathan, both merchants in Magdeburg. After the death of her mother, Charlotte learned the trade of a milliner. Eugen and Charlotte married on September 2, 1942 in Amsterdam after they fleed to the Netherlands, facing the impending deportation.  

 

Eugen fleed to Den Haag in 1937 and Charlotte followed him in 1939. The married couple lived in various dutch cities, including Bussum and Amsterdam. On March 5, 1943 both were imprisoned in the concentration camp in Hertogenbosch and later, on May 23, 1943 they were transferred to the Westerbork transit camp. Two days later they were deported to the Sobibor extermination camp, where both were murdered on May 28, 1943.
